Matcha green tea face mask

Matcha

My love affair with matcha continues.

In this recent article I wrote about the top 12 health benefits of green tea, and why matcha is the best kind to choose.

Today I want to tell you about the super-easy and best-ever face mask I’ve been making using matcha powder.

Matcha powder is loaded with antioxidants to nourish your skin and protect against sun damage and it is also gently cooling and anti-inflammatory.

You can make this mask simply by adding water to the powder, but if you have some, a little raw organic coconut oil will take this treatment to the next level.

Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory too, it’s a great moisturiser, and its natural anti-bacterial properties will help keep your skin radiantly clear.

This mask gives a glow like No Other face mask I’ve ever tried. That it smells heavenly too (assuming you love the smell of wholesome as I do) is an added bonus. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon organic matcha powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon raw organic coconut oil
  • Water

1. Put a level tablespoon of matcha powder in a small bowl and add 1/2 a teaspoon of coconut oil and a few drops of water.

2. Stir to mix ingredients and keep on adding water a few drops at a time until you get a smooth yet thick paste. Make it too runny – especially if you go overboard with the coconut oil – and you’ll have a green slime that will slide right off your face.

If you have the right consistency, the mask will both go on easily and stay put. It will then slowly dry. Apply it to the whole of your face and neck and then leave it on for at least an hour.

This mask is so pure and mild you can even leave it on overnight if you wish, to allow even more of the good stuff to absorb through your skin.

Soak a flannel in warm water to remove the mask. As you rub off the dried mixture you’ll be gently exfoliating your skin as you reveal your noticeably more radiant complexion.

  • Hi! How are you? I am great, I have a few questions about the matcha face mask, I have very sensitive acne prone skin. I used the organic unrefined extra virgin coconut oil before as a face moisturizer at night everyday to help clear my acne. I was told that at first your acne would get worse because it is going thru a detoxifying phase and your face will purge and get worse before it gets better. The worse acne should happen for about three weeks due to the purging but in about a month your face will clear up and if it does not then your skin is allergic to it and you must stop which I did. So I want to use the matcha powder with water only, my question is will it help clear my acne or will my acne get worse before it gets better? How often can i use the matcha face mask? Can I use it everynight? Do I wash my face with my cleanser first, then apply mask, after 30 minutes I will rinse mask and then do I apply my moisturizer? Is that the correct routine? Please let me know I appreciate your help.

    • Hi Corina!

Great questions! As far as whether acne will get worse before it gets better using this mask, we all react to things differently. However, one thing I will say is that whereas I’ve noticed that a clay mask definitely has this purging, worse-before-it’s-better effect on my skin, I haven’t ever had that effect with the matcha mask.

You can use it every night if you like and yes to cleansing first and moisturising after. Unless you apply a very thick layer of the mask to your face, you will probably find it’s dried within 15 to 20 minutes – at this point you can remove it. There is nothing in it that’s likely to cause a bad skin reaction – you’re more likely to get a lovely glow! Assuming you do, go ahead and leave it on for 30 minutes or longer next time, if you wish.

      Hope this helps!

  • I tried this for the first time last night and wow! Just amazing! I have very sensitive skin, eczema and acne and have been trying out a bunch of natural remedies to heal my acne without irritating my skin. I had tried a clay mask a few nights ago and woke up in the morning to find 3 huge cystic pimples…so frustrating. Maybe it works for some people but I’m just not willing to let my skin get worse before it gets better. So after reading your blog I tried the matcha mask last night. I noticed right after washing it off the redness I have on my cheeks and chin was gone and my pores looked smaller. When I woke up this morning the cystic pimples the clay mask had given me a few days ago are almost gone!!! They don’t hurt anymore and the redness gone. LOVE this mask!!!!

  • I really enjoy using this kind of mask! I’ve noticed that when I remove the mask, my skin is tinted green. What is the best way to remove this color without undoing everything and damaging the skin?

  • Hi Sarah!! Thankyou so much for this idea!!

I have very acne prone/oily skin and this mask worked absolute wonders (thankyou matcha!!!). I mixed some matcha left over from the bottom of my tea with a dr hauschka powder clay mask and some water (and some more matcha to top it off hehe), the results were incredible! I woke up the next day and felt so awesome about my skin that I didn’t wear makeup to uni for the first time in 3 years!!!

If anyone else is a dr hauschka userI recommend mixing your matcha with this 100% natural clay mask! because its all natural/organic you are very unlikely to have a negative reaction to it!!

    much love xxx

  • Hi. I tried this and it’s amazing. I do have however a few questions:
    1. How should I store the leftover so it doesn’t turn black?
    2. Do I need to heat up the coconot oil so it becomes liquid or can I use it as a paste? Last time I used the paste but was not sure about ratios.
    Thanks in advance!

    • Hi Norys,

      1. The best way to store any excess is in a sealed, airtight container.

      2. No, no need to heat the coconut oil. Just give it a good stir; that’ll melt it enough to work with 🙂

  • Hi Sarah,

I love the mask on my face, it is like heaven. I am just wondering how often I can use this mask. Because it felt so good I want to use it every day. But don’t want to if it should be once a month.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful mask!

    • Hi Lori,

That’s wonderful that you’ve been enjoying the mask. How often depends on your skin. For some women once or twice a week will be ideal, while others will find they can use it more frequently with great results. I’d say experiment, and if your skin starts to feel sore or dry, pull back on the frequency.

  • I currently use hemp oil to wash my face and have seen improvement with acne however still struggling with breakouts and scarring. Could I mix matcha with the hemp oil? Or what other suggestions do you have aside from coconut oil? I have never used coconut oil on face and that makes me nervous. Or could I mix with Greek yogurt or water? My skin is combination but sometimes more oily just depends. Tks so much

  • Wonderful, wonderful post! I now use this everyday. I mix the power with coconut oil and lemon juice. My pores are almost invisible. The lemon juice has exfoliated, brightened and tightened my skin. I use sun screen daily since lemon juice and sunlight can be damaging. I look forward to reading through you blog. Great advice!
